Hellooooo 2012! Hopefully everyone had a wonderful holiday season and a bompin’ New Years. 2012 is the year of the dragon, which means that babies born this year will be enterprising, self-assured, and brave. (Also conceited, tactless, and scrutinizing, but who cares!) As a dragon baby myself, I thought I’d post some pictures and videos of the great band Little Dragon. Their latest album Ritual Union has been playing on repeat around these parts, and the lead singer Yukimi Nagano is truly a style star.

“Dudes Who Like Things” is a men’s lifestyle blog curated by a friend of mine, Ryan. Ryan has a great eye for fashion and often mixes contemporary with vintage finds. Here is a Q & A we did:

Your blog seems to find fashion in all kinds of mediums. How do music and visual art translate into your style? 

I’ve noticed style in general to reflect lifestyle and interests. Whether chosen intentionally or not. Fashion like music and visual art are all forms of expression. Fashion is just one you can wear.

For example, I noticed you had a picture from the Richard Serra drawings exhibition. How do you absorb and translate that into your day-to-day life?

Again, art is a form of communication and it serves to express something to the viewer. Just like anything else that we post, this particular piece made a strong impression and we were compelled to share it with our viewers. 

Where, outside of the art world, do you seek inspiration? 

The art world is always a great community to draw from, but I love drawing inspiration from my own personal life and surroundings, particularly things that I have personally experienced that can offer something more than the latest trends.

Tell us about the name of your blog. I’d consider you to be a “regular dude” in a lot of ways, but I’m not really sure what that means.  

I don’t either [laughs]. The name stemmed from a joke shared among some of my friends from college. I feel the name “Dudes Who Like Things” catches people off guard a little or makes them chuckle because it is kind of whacky. And I like that. 

I know you and your girlfriend like to go to the Brooklyn Flea. Do you wear a lot of vintage? What do you consider to be the role of vintage in fashion, particularly in menswear? 

For me vintage is about the thrill of hunt. There is so much out there to look through and finding that diamond in the rough every now and then makes it a lot of fun. I love eBay too for both buying and selling, It is also a great tool for assessing the value of something. I have a few favorite items right now; one is a Navy CPO shirt from Sears with a paisley silk lining that I won on ebay. Men’s vintage differs from women’s mainly in its availability. (You girls have way more digging to do).

As everyone is talking about, Pantone has named “Tangerine Tango” the color of 2012. In honor of this, I grabbed my favorite, most drool-worthy amazing tangerine piece in the store. Voila this 1980s Christian Lacroix Pret-a-Porter dress slash blazer slash jacket.

Tip #1: Don’t be intimidated by length- Regardless of the formality of the party, a flowy long frock can be dressed up or down to make a great statement.

Tip #2: Baubles- Costume jewelry is perfect for these types of occasions. A beautiful necklace, cocktail ring, and sparkly earrings each make a great addition to any holiday ensemble.

Tip #3: Little black dress- If you don’t have the time or resources for a new dress, consider repurposing your favorite LBD. Tights and a great jacket can translate your wardrobe staple for the holidays. Just be sure to accessorize with Tip #2. 

Tip #4: Velvet- Now is the time to really work that crushed velvet jacket or velvet trimmed dress that’s been sitting in your closet. This luxe material is right at home during the holidays.

Tip #5: Finishing touches- The devil is in the details. Festive fingernails and a wintry scent can make all the difference.
